This tool calculates the time delay of a Radio Frequency signal as it propagates through a coaxial cable.
Enter:
- Length of the cable
- Velocity of propagation as a % of speed of light c (values for commonly used RF cables such as LMR400 and RG58 are provided or you can enter a custom value)
Background
RF cables are built with different materials that affect
- Signal Amplitude (use the cable loss calculator to find signal attenuation)
- Time delay
This calculator provides the time delay due to the RF cable and also gives the delay when the signal is propagating in free space. The delay is always larger for the cable.
Example Calculations
Use the data sheet of the cable to find the velocity of propagation. The table below shows a few examples
Cable | Propagation Velocity (% of c) |
---|---|
LMR-400 | 84 |
LMR-100A | 66 |
RG-11 | 66 |
RG-58 | 65.9 |
