This tool converts a percentage value to an equivalent multiplier. This is also known as a “percent to times” calculator.
Calculator
- Enter the percent (%) value
- Select Increase or Decrease
- Enter an initial value to which the % increase or decrease is applied
The tool will provide the multiplier and the final value
Example Calculations
- An increase of 30% corresponds to a multiplier of 1.3
- A decrease of 30% corresponds to a multiplier of 0.7
Background
A multiplier is often used to apply a percentage increase or decrease to a value. To convert a percentage to its equivalent multiplier:
- To increase a value by a percentage: The multiplier is 1+p/100. For example, to increase a value by 20%, the multiplier would be 1+20/100=1.2. The final value is 1.2 times the initial value.
- To decrease a value by a percentage: The multiplier is 1−p/100. For example, to decrease a value by 20%, the multiplier would be 1−20/100=0.8.
If you have a value and you want to apply a percentage increase or decrease to it, you multiply the value by the respective multiplier.
