dB to Effective Bits Calculator

This tool calculates Effective Number of Bits (ENOB) in an Analog-to-digital converter (ADC). It uses the dB value of Signal Noise and Distortion (SINAD) and the formula:

ENOBbits = (SINADdB – 1.76)/6.02




Example Calculation

For a SINAD of 60 dB, the ENOB is equal to 9.67.

Let’s take a look at the data sheet for a practical ADC.

Using the SINAD value of 72.2 dB, we get 11.7 effective bits. This value is consistent with the table above.
