Bandwidth Efficiency Calculator

Use this tool to calculate the bandwidth or spectral efficiency [1]. It is a measure of how efficiently frequency spectrum is utilized by the physical layer protocol.

Formula

Bandwidth Efficiency = Throughput/Bandwidth

Example Calculation

A 4G/LTE signal that uses a bandwidth of 20 MHz to deliver 75 Mb/s has a bandwidth efficiency of 3.75 bit/s/Hz.

If a 5G signal that uses the same bandwidth to deliver 125 Mb/s, it has a spectral efficiency of 6.25 bit/s/Hz.

Wi-Fi 802.11ax has a bandwidth of 80 MHz and is able to deliver 600 Mb/s. The efficiency is 7.5 bit/s/Hz.
